Desert Cap and Gown Mini Session

It’s wonderful to celebrate a senior with photos at the start of their senior year, but capturing seniors in their graduation cap and gown is an even bigger party!  It’s amazing how many different poses and angles and details we can capture with your regalia, even if some of it is missing!

Ella, University of Washington class of 2025, ordered her cap and gown on the first day she could, and still they didn’t arrive in time for our session!  Luckily she has an older sister, and borrowed her cap and gown, but we had to do without the tassel and stole.  Even without these details, capturing Ella’s success in her cap and gown was such a fun moment!

Want to get your own cap and gown photos?  Here are some tips!

  1. Find out when cap and gown orders arrive, and schedule your session between that date and your graduation date.
  1. Make it a Mini!  We don’t necessarily need a whole hour to photograph you with your cap and gown.  A shorter session might be perfect for this specialty session.
  1. Use your iron!  The easiest way to add class to your cap and gown session is to remove all the wrinkles from your gown, and especially your stole.  They usually arrive bagged up in plastic, and can have some pretty significant creases in them.  It’s worth your time to heat up that iron and smooth those away.  I promise it brings the look to the next level!
  1. Wear something dressy under your gown.  Flip flops don’t go with a cap and gown.  Dress it up a little like the occasion that it is and you’ll love the result!

Ella is earning her bachelors in Environmental Science from the University of Washington, and she’s especially focused on the plants of the shrub-steppe, so it was only natural that we headed to Badger Mountain to take photos in the sagebrush.  She even has a sagebrush sprig tattooed on her arm, so this girl definitely belongs in the desert!  We lucked out on the weather that evening, and caught the golden sunset glow.

Ella, congratulations on your achievement, and that you already have a job lined up!  You’re off to great things, and I’m so excited for you as you start this new chapter.  It was so fun to celebrate with you around our native plants, and I’m glad you’ll have these memories captured forever.  Go Huskies!
